I've been on the hunt for an affordable, cleaner alternative to traditional dishwasher detergent. With young kids in the house, I pay closer attention to what we're using, especially on dishes, cups, and baby bottle parts.
Traditional pods have always concerned me. Many are wrapped in a plastic-based film, and when I've used them in the past, I've occasionally found residue left behind on items placed on the top (third) rack of my dishwasher, particularly baby bottle parts. That meant rewashing, drying again, and questioning whether everything was truly clean. Not ideal.
There are other cleaner pods on the market, but most still use some form of plastic film. And in general, alternative dishwasher detergents often come with a noticeable upcharge.
So when I found dishwasher detergent sheets, I was intrigued.
Why I Decided to Try Dishwasher Sheets
These sheets seemed like a practical win for several reasons:
- Easy to store (they take up very little space)
- Easy to transport
- Easy to divide for small or large loads
- No bulky container
- No plastic-wrapped pod
I also appreciated that they are unscented. Artificial fragrance is not something I want lingering on dishes, especially cups and utensils used by children.

How They Performed
In my testing, I ran a normal overnight dishwasher cycle with a light to moderate load. I did not add rinse aid. I wanted to see how they performed under normal, everyday conditions.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised.
The dishes came out clean and comparable to what I typically see with traditional name-brand detergents. I specifically paid attention to my stainless steel plates and utensils, which tend to hold onto sticky foods more than ceramic or glass. While everything was not ultra-polished or dramatically different from other detergents, the results were very comparable to the many products I've tried.
Most importantly, I did not experience the residue issue that previously frustrated me with pods.
And the unscented factor was a huge bonus. There was no artificial fragrance left behind.
